Sunday, July 20, 2014: 3:00 pm (Serpico): As developer-journalists, Harlo and Aurelia work with sensitive information about critical investigations of governments, institutions, and individuals - domestic and foreign. Bart Gellman of the Washington Post is one of three journalists who received classified NSA archives from Edward Snowden. The security and reliability of the information these panelists handle is of the utmost importance. Managing their resources and notes while maintaining the privacy and safety of their sources can be complicated as they work on collaborative teams of varying technical and subject expertise. This talk will go over how journalists collaborate covertly in the newsroom, reviewing some tools and applications for dead-dropping data, and protecting privacy where possible, at places like the Washington Post, the Guardian Project, the New York Times, Ushahidi, and Internews Kenya.
